My Value as a Second Shooter
I photographed my first wedding in 2009. Over the next 12 years, I photographed roughly 20 weddings, each one of these as the lead photographer.
In 2022, I left my job to become a stay-at-home-dad full time. An opportunity arose to second shoot a half-dozen weddings with a friend, and that, in turn, lead to me second shooting nearly 30 weddings in 2022 alone!
Though I am fully capable of running a wedding on my own, I have found a joy as an associate shooter that I think will pay off huge for you. My experience with handling weddings as a lead comes in handy as I'm often ready for what's next before you can say it.
The Guys
Obviously, a big focus for the second shooter is often the time spent with the groom before the ceremony. As you're off with the bride and her squad, I'll be with the guys, capturing all the details of the groom's very special day.
I shoot on a pair of Nikon D750's, with my primary lenses being a Nikkor 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. I've also got a Nikkor fisheye lens that I often bring out on the dance floor, which combined with my long arms makes for some real unique shots. I've also got a 150-600 lens that I usually keep in the car, for the occasional church venue that won't let us get up close, or any other time we may need that extra reach!
I also use a suite of Godox lighting gear, with on and off-camera flash options to suit whatever occasion arises.
Speaking of my long arms, though this may sound funny, my height has often come in handy for lead shooters who aren't quite as tall. Whether it comes to hanging a dress up high, or holding a light stand where you need it, I'll be ready to go.
Throughout the day, you'll never find me getting in your shots. I'm constantly aware of your location, (as well as any videographer who may be with us), and I stay very focused on not getting in each other's way.
If during cocktail hour, you want me to assist you with portraits, rounding people up and posing them, you got it. If you'd rather I was inside capturing the party, while you handle the formals, that's great too.
God forbid something should happen to you, I'll be ready and able to take charge. Barring that, I think you'll find me to be a great member of the team.
